The Shelby County Schools Education Foundation is proud to present the 9th annual "Race for Education."

The excitement is set for November 8, 2009 at Houston Middle School in Germantown, TN.  Join us for a 5K run/1mile Family Fun Walk.  The 5K race will begin promptly at 2:00 P.M., followed by the 1 mile Family Fun Walk shortly thereafter. There will be entertainment, fun and prizes for children of all ages, so be sure to get there early.  This is a Memphis Runner's Club sanctioned event and medals will be given to the top three runners in each age group as well as overall winners.   Early registration is available for $15 (plus an additional $2.50 processing fee for online payment) through 10/23/09.  After 10/23/09, registration increases to $20 (plus an additional $2.50 fee for online payment) until 11/5/09. Mail-in registrations must be postmarked by 11/2/09.  Online Registration closes on 11/5/09.  After this date you may register on race day beginning at Noon for $25. Packets containing your bib, chip, and shirt may be picked up at the HMS back parking lot starting at 12:30pm on race day.

The "Race for Education" was started in 2001 by a group of Shelby County parents who set out to help raise funds for the areas of art, music and physical education. That year these programs were at risk of being eliminated in an effort to balance the school system's budget. Over the last 8 years, this race has raised over $378,000 to provide the teachers in these areas valuable resources. These funds help them offer not just good programs, but outstanding programs for all of the students of Shelby County. Some of our schools will be performing for us on race day.

Thanks to the generosity of community sponsors, almost every penny of all of the monies raised goes directly back into the schools. In fact, one half of each individual registration fee can be designated to go directly to the school of your choice and the other half will be distributed district-wide. If you cannot attend the race, please show your support by signing up as a "ghost runner". By doing this, your school will benefit financially and you will still receive this year's t-shirt. The principals and specialists at each school decide how this money can be best used to enhance their existing programs. Thank you for supporting the art, music and physical education programs throughout Shelby County! See you at the race!
